At First Glance…

Lately, I’ve been studying the sky more than anything else. The weight of this world and all the troubles that come with it have become so heavy that the only way for me to breathe is to sit in a posture of looking up. The vast expanse of the atmospheric sky holds mesmerizing paintings that are ever changing. It’s like an artist’s personal gallery continuously adding new masterpieces to behold and reveal. So much of the hope in me is spoken to me through the varying beauties I find in these scenes.

Take for example this photo of a sky at the beginning of a storm. The contrast between the oppressive, looming darkness covering the remaining fragments of lightened sky, show the ones witnessing this takeover, the absolute power that is in the dark. The darkest clouds feel so heavy as if deadweighting themselves on the lightened sky to suffocate it into submission. I feel the weight of it. It is suffocating.

But there is another truth to behold in this scene… at first glance it looks like the dark is laying on top of the light, but look at little closer and you will find a deeper truth. Nothing in this life is 2D. The light isn’t coming from the bottom, but from behind and above and shining through to us at the ground level of this earth. So while the oppression of the heaviest of rain clouds is in full view of our perspective, from above it is only a veil between us and the sun shining so clearly and brightly and most importantly uninteruptedly.

This can be a metaphor for what ever storm you are facing, whatever weight is trying to hold you down, it isn’t as consuming as you believe, tilt your perspective just a bit and see the sun warming the earth all around this fleeting storm.
